STRUCTURAL TIMBER SIZES:

TIMBER GRADES:

The main purpose of grading timber is to establish and maintain an acceptable uniformity in the product, so that a given grade will represent the same quality and be usable for the same purpose, regardless of the nature of the raw materials from which it was derived or the manufacturer by which it was produced. Grading, therefore, provides both manufacturers and users with known values on which to base contracts.

STRESS GRADED STRUCTURAL TIMBER

Stress grading is used to quantify the structural strength of the timber board. The two most common stress grades used in SA is S5 and S7 and refers to the numeric value of the grade stress in bending that can be safely sustained by the piece under long term loading conditions. The National Standards applicable is SANS 1783, SANS 10096 for finger joints and SANS 1288 for CCA treatment. Stress Graded Structural Timber is mainly used in load bearing applications like roof trusses and in timber frame construction.

UTILITY GRADE:

Often also referred to as Black Cross Grade, not suitable for load bearing applications as it is uncertified and may contain any defects. Utility Grade timber is utilized in non-load bearing applications.
